Brighton Public Library

Thank-you to Alyssa for this post about our annual Seed Exchange, and the BPL Seed Library!

Saturday March 22nd was our annual Seed Exchange event! This was a time for
garden-loving folk and novices alike to exchange seeds and get ready for the
growing season. Our friends from the Brighton Garden Club were on hand to help
out and answer questions, and BPL staff were showing off our Seed Library.
This is the 3rd year we have done a Seed Exchange; it’s always a great opportunity
for us to bring people together, to learn and collaborate.

This is also the 3rd year we have partnered with the Brighton Garden Club for this event. The Brighton Garden Club members have ample garden knowledge and experience, so
it was a natural fit! The Brighton Garden Club will mark their 100th anniversary on
Saturday June 14th in Memorial Park. There will be lots of vendors, activities,
displays – and we will be there too!

The Seed Library is a free service for Brighton community members, and no library card required. Simply choose seeds from our collection, and plant them at your home. At the end of the growing season, collect seeds from a few of your plants and return them to the library’s collection. Then next season, pick up more seeds to grow! When you use the Seed Library, please note on the check-out sheet which seeds you have taken or returned (this is how BPL staff know what is popular and what needs refreshing). The Seed Library is available at the library year round; just look for the little green chest of drawers above the magazines next time you are in.

Thanks to Pare’s Home Hardware and the Brighton Garden Club, the Seed Library was able to transform from an idea in 2023 to the collection it has become now. We hope you enjoy this community-driven part of the library, and tell us about your gardening!
